Join our Volunteers!

Historic Forks of the Wabash offers numerous volunteer opportunities for individuals and organizations. Volunteers fill a number of vital roles at the Forks.  Most of the work of maintaining the site and interpreting the history of the Forks of the Wabash is done by volunteers. Whatever your talent or interest, Historic Forks has a place for you.

  • Volunteer Coordinator - Click here for more information on this very special volunteer opportunity.
  • Interpretation - If you are interested in helping to interpret the history of the Forks, we will train you as an historic interpreter. The main areas are Eighteenth Century pioneer life, the Treaty Period and the relationship between the United States and the Native Americans in this area, everyday life of the Miami Indians, and the Wabash and Erie Canal. If you already have knowledge in one of these areas, or some other area related to our site or our time period, we would be glad for your help at the Forks. If you would like to learn, we will train you.
  • Crafts - If you have craft or trade skills related to life in the Eighteenth Century, we would love to have you demonstrate on special occasions at the Forks.
  • Care of Artifacts - Keeping the many furnishings and artifacts in our buildings and museum clean and ready to meet the public is a constant challenge. We also have a number of items which are being prepared for public use or which need cataloguing. We can always use help with this. No special skills are needed but some training is required so you will know the proper way to treat the variety of artifacts in our collection.
  • Grounds Care - We have about ten acres of land which needs to be mowed on a regular schedule. The grounds need to be picked up regularly, and sometimes the river bank needs attention.
  • Maintenance and Construction - If you know how to fix things around the house, we can use you from time to time to help with the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment.
  • Visitors' Center Staff - People are needed to receive visitors, collect admission fees, and tend the Gift Shop. A friendly smile and an ability to greet people are the main requirements. A brief training session will qualify you to work in the Visitors' Center, and a little more training will prepare you to work in the Gift Shop.

If you would like to help us by volunteering for any of the above jobs, please call us at (260) 356-1903

Or, you can write to us at:

We can give you more detail about the jobs listed above, if you would like. And if you have an idea for a project or an activity you would like to do at the Forks, we will be happy to listen to you. Historic Forks has been a community project from the beginning, and we believe that the more people we get involved with Historic Forks the better off we all are.
